Old Bill, Farmersville’s postmaster, losses his wife in a terrible fire everyone knows the Fenton’s started. Left to raise his daughters alone, he struggles to keep them on the straight and narrow as they come of age. Cindy Lou, the youngest, finds herself torn between two men: Cory, a very successful, much older, friend of her father’s and Jimmy Fenton, the son of her mother’s killers - the town outcast. While her father’s eyes and attention are focused on Cindy Lou, Esther, her older sister, takes comfort in the arms of another young man whose commitment to her is fickle and fleeting.
What’s a girl to do with the best catch in town is ready and willing to marry her? How can she resist the advances of the town outcast when the very sight of him makes her and her father tremble - for very different reasons? Will Cory, the owner of the general store, win her love or will she risk everything to be with a boy whose reputation could destroy her own?
Coming of age in Farmersville proves more challenging than Cindy Lou could ever have dreamed, when an innocent crush turns her tight-knit community upside down. Nothing is simple and everything has its price.
Introducing the Primary Characters
Old Bill: They call him 'Old Bill' and that's the way he likes it. As postmaster of Farmersville, he's just about everybody's most trusted friend, usually the first to know when something has gone right in a body's life, and when things have gone terribly wrong. His greatest struggle in life, of late, has been less about running his mail and more about running after his daughters.
Cindy Lou: Old Bill's youngest daughter, Cindy Lou is growing into a beautiful young woman. Her heart and mind are set, each on a different man. Her greatest challenge is in striking a balance between her father's needs, her older sister, Esther's, demands and what she wants to do about the two men who've begun to really notice her. Time to sit and think seem most appealing and most elusive, when things get out of control in Cindy Lou's busy life.
Esther: Old Bill's middle daughter, it seems, is rushing headlong in the wrong direction. If she had her way, she'd be an only child, but nobody seems to notice, or care. Sandwiched miserably between an older sister who's already married and on her own, and a little sister who's got everybody wrapped around her little finger, Esther needs attention and she knows who will give it to her.
Sarah: Old Bill's eldest daughter, Sarah, is a married woman, living on her new husband's family farm far away from her family. As her sisters get older, Sarah is distressed to find herself advising her aging father about what's best for the two girls and him. There's no way she can run two households so far apart, so she must do her best to maintain an emotional presence in two distant places, at her
own expense.
Reviews
I'm about half done with the book. You've done it again! I hate to put it down because I want to know what happens! I love the way you write--the characters are so real and I can picture them in my head, if that makes sense. Thanks! (back to reading now..... :) ) Suzy
Well I finished the book. Actually a few days ago. Once I started , I couldn't put it down. I loved the play on the characters. Then there was the part where they had mood swings. It was terrific. You also got me on the ending, when I read your work I just never know how it's going to end......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was fun to watch the charters grow up mentally then some grow meaner. I really loved it and think you put so much mystery, love and even hatred in to it. Pretty hard thing to carry off!!
